Choosing A First Dance Teacher (Continued...)

This is the place where lots of people go wrong or have bad experiences with instructors.

If you do not have a song choice when you go to the instructor then it can be very hard for them to choreograph something and it may feel like you're wasting your time in the lessons.

If you have a song choice, or at least have a discussion with them about it in advance then they can prepare something and begin teaching you in your first lesson. This makes the whole process a lot easier for everyone involved.

Communication is very important. Do you find it easy to communicate with the instructor? Because there will be a lot of dialogue going on and you will need to ask for help at certain points so it helps to be comfortable around them.

If you are planning on doing more than one dance style or dance to more than one song, perhaps in a medley of songs then you may need to seek out different teachers for the different styles you are learning.

Let them know what your plan is so they know what's happening in the whole scheme of things also and that they are not the sole person in charge of your wedding dance.

Remember you will need quite a number of lessons in each dance style that you are choosing so make sure you have scheduled enough time for all the lessons if you plan on doing more than one dance style!

Once you've had all the discussions about the song and dance styles and are decided on them, you need to work towards getting that music to the teacher.

If you have chosen just one dance style that should be fairly simple for the instructor to get their hands on the music, but if it is something more obscure then you may need to help them out by providing a CD or emailing them an MP3.

If it is a medley of songs that you are preparing to dance to you will need to prepare a mix of the music so that the instructor can see where the songs begin and end so they can choreograph precisely to it.

You can hire a producer or DJ to do this for you, or if it is very simple you can even do it yourself with free music mixing/ music editing software.

You will want to get the music into the hands of your wedding dance teacher as soon as possible so that they can prepare the whole dance.

If you leave it to the last minute, on dancing to the final mix you may find that there are blank areas present. This can be easily avoided just by getting the music sorted quickly and dancing to it in the lessons.
