Getting Started
There are a few things that you will need to consider before you even start the wedding dance lessons themselves. Thankfully this is pretty simple, and even fun work to do.
The first thing you want to think about is...
How Would You Like To Dance?
There are a number of wedding dance styles that you can choose and different first dance dance teachers or companies may specialize in different styles.
Some of the most popular dance styles for wedding dances include ballrooom, foxtrot and the waltz. More unusual styles are hip hop dance and street dance!
The research for this is quite straight-forward. You can just log on to YouTube.com and watch some wedding videos where the dances take form in the different dance styles.
The videos that you watch don't even need to be of a first dance - you can just watch any videos in those dance styles to get an idea of the types of moves you will be doing.
Some dance styles are more difficult than others. Most couples that begin lessons will be beginners in their chosen dance style and so will learn from scratch.
If there is a particular dance company or dance teacher that you would like to learn from, perhaps by recommendation from a friend then it is worth asking that company if they have any videos of previous dances that they have choreographed.
Routines can look different even within the same dance style and can have different difficulty levels. If you want a difficult routine then you will probably have to pay for more dance lessons.
Once you have watched some videos you will start to become familiar with what you can expect from each dance style and what types of music that they work well with.
You may be able to decide on a dance style quite easily. As there are still some other considerations to be made before you begin the wedding dance lessons themselves, it is fine just to have a shortlist of dance styles that you like at this point.
Who knows, when you come to your decision you may decide that you want to do more than one dance style on the day!
