Perfecting Your First Dance

You dream of that perfect wedding dance. Feet perfect, timing perfect and utterly beautiful to watch.

This is more than possible if you have followed the steps thus far. These have taken you as far as finding a good wedding dance teacher that you are learning from. So what we are aiming for here is perfecting the routine.

To do this takes...you guessed it practice! Try to set aside some time between lessons to go over the routine you are learning. This also allows you to spend lesson time on more pertinent details and gives the instructor more time to work on whatever these may be.

Even if your practice time is short, try and do at least a little between lessons even if it just going over it once or twice.

The first few lessons you may find it hard to remember what you have done during the lessons, but after a few lessons it should become easier to remember once you have become more familiar with many of the steps.

In the latter lessons closer to the weddding it definitely becomes more important to practise the first dance. What you want is to get it to the point where you can get at least the steps perfect more or less every time in the very last lessons you have.

On wedding day you don't want to be worried about the steps to your wedding dance but have it locked in your memory so you can just pull it out like a piece of gum when the time comes.

Also practicing the moves will make you more confident doing them. And the more confident you are, the better the dancing will be! Confidence breeds confidence and it will make your partner more confident as well.

Practise the dance with the music that you have chosen so that everything is seamless and you know where every move goes. It is also fine to practise without music, as long as you do enough practice with the music as well.

If there are sections of the routine that need more work or guidance from the teacher ask them if you can spend a bit more time on these sections in the lesson so that you can get these bits up to scratch.

In some cases you may be doing the step incorrectly which is why it may not feel easy to do - which is why it's always worth asking the instructor for their feedback!
